Search Engine Marketing Myths

Common Marketing Myths

Myth #1: If you build a website, you will get traffic
All websites are designed to get traffic. Traffic is the holy grail of the internet. However, you may have the coolest site, with the best design and not get a single visitor. There are millions of websites on the internet. The chances of someone stumbling across your website is like trying to find a needle in a million haystacks. Every good business needs marketing, websites are no exception. You need to get your website out where the traffic on the internet will find you.

Myth #2: SEO companies can promise top spots on the search engines
Nobody can guarantee you top spots on the search engines. If they do the right things chances are pretty good that you will get a top spot. However, the search engines are changing all the time. It also depends on how competitive your industry is and how many searches there are for your keywords. Each SEO company is working with the same search engine algorithms and we cannot control where Google, Yahoo and MSN rank you. The only definite thing is, without optimization and a link strategy, your chances of getting ranked in the top spots is a lot less likely.

Myth #3: We can do our own website optimization
Most companies do not have the expertise to do their own optimization. Web design and optimization are two separate things. You can do your own optimization, however if you don't know anything about optimization at this moment, plan on giving yourselves months to figure it out.

Myth #4: I can buy optimization software and get ranked that way.
Each website is different and needs a tailor made approach. Software can do some simple changes, some code but cannot differentiate between websites. Besides, search engine formulas are changing all the time and it's likely that your software will be outdated in the months to come.

Myth #5: I can do optimization one time and that's all I need.
Not exactly, there are a couple of reasons to be constantly working on your optimization. For starters, your competition is also working on it. You might get a high ranking but if you sit back and relax, you'll find that your competition will catch you and pass you up. Also, the search engines are changing all of the time, the strategies that work now will probably not work down the road. One time optimizers almost always drop off of the first page of results after a while.

Myth #6: I put in the right Meta tags and I'll get ranked high.
Meta tags are a small part of a big puzzle. They are important but they are not the only thing that you need to tweak in order to improve your ranking. Sometimes a good meta tag change can make a big difference, mostly it won't. There isn't one magic bullet that can vault you to the top of the search engines. It's more like 30 little things that you must do just right in order to get ranked high. With that said, by all means do your meta tags, but don't stop there.
