Q: What is Optimization?

A: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a website from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website Web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

The acronym “SEO” can also refer to “search engine optimizers,” a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign.

Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into website development and design. The term “search engine-friendly” may be used to describe website designs, menus, content-management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.

Q: How long will it take for my website to be ranked high on search engines?

A: It depends on a number of factors, such as how established your site is and how many other people are competing for the keywords you’re targeting. For example, if 1,000 people are trying to be on the first page of results for your keywords, it will take you much less time to get to the first page than if that number was 1 million. The more specific your keywords, the fewer competitors you will have. That’s one reason why it’s so important to target your niche carefully.

Search engines favor websites that are well-linked to similar sites and that have keyword-rich content. These changes can be made fairly quickly, but they don’t guarantee instant high placement on search engines. SEO is a process that requires consistent effort, and it often pays off in big ways.

Q: How much control do I have over the targeted keywords in my SEO campaign?

A: You can have as much control as you like over the keywords in your SEO campaign. We are very flexible. When you sign up for an SEO package a technician contacts you and asks what types of keywords you would like to target. You can either give specific keywords you have already researched or you can give general guidelines and ask the technician to research which ones would work best for you.

You are always in control of your SEO campaign because you have the final word on what you want. The technician will make suggestions to help you hone your keywords, but you are in charge. We are your partner in helping you market your services. We hope your SEO or other campaign with us will be an indispensable part of your business.

Q: What do you do to get me highly ranked with SEO?

A: Submit Solution uses a variety of strategies to improve your SEO rankings. Keep in mind no one can guarantee you first-page ranking because Internet marketers do not control search engines’ algorithms. We are confident your rankings will improve over time, though, as we consistently use proven SEO strategies.

One of those strategies is optimizing your website by adding and improving your Meta tags, Web page titles, URLs and sitemap. We also optimize your site’s content with your chosen keywords and we use link-building strategies to get you linked to relevant sites.

Q: Why do I even need to be in the search engines?

A: Today, everyone uses the Internet to do everything from buying Christmas gifts to emailing family members across the country. The only way to show that your ecommerce business is relevant is to have a website and advertise on the search engines so that you can take a piece of the pie. Plus, it’s easy to get lost in the clutter of billions of websites. Unless you’re ranked on Google, Bing and Yahoo potential customers will never find you.

Q: What do you need from me to optimize my website?

A: We are flexible in what we need from you. If you would like to give us access to your FTP or site builder, we can go into your site and optimize it for you. If you don’t feel comfortable giving us access to your website or if you simply prefer to optimize your site yourself, we are happy to oblige. We can email you instructions or walk you through the optimization process by phone. We’re eager to be your partner in improving your website.

Q: What are Sponsored Listings and Natural or Free Listings?

A: The major search engines will list two different types of results. The first is Sponsored Listings or Sponsored ads, which are displayed at the top, right-hand side and bottom of most search results. These results are ranked based on a bidding system implemented by the search engine. Second is the Natural or Free Listings, which are displayed from 1-10 between the Sponsored listings on the search-result page.

Q: What is Pay Per Click?

A: Pay Per Click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks, and content sites, such as blogs, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than using a bidding system.

Websites that utilize PPC ads will display an advertisement when a keyword query matches an advertiser’s keyword list, or when a content site displays relevant content. Such advertisements are called “sponsored links” or “sponsored ads,” and they appear adjacent to or above organic results on search-result pages, or anywhere a Web developer chooses on a content site.

Although many PPC providers exist, Google Ad Words, Yahoo Search Marketing, and Microsoft Ad Center are the three largest network operators, and all three operate under a bid-based model. Cost per click (CPC) varies depending on the search engine and the level of competition for a particular keyword.

Q: I’m doing banner ads, popups and Web rings. Why am I not making sales?

A: There are different levels of traffic. Traffic from links, popups, banners and Web rings is generally not targeted traffic and less likely to result in a sale. Qualified traffic comes from search engines, people who find you by looking for your keywords. Search-engine traffic, if marketed correctly, can bring you the most focused and qualified visitors.

Q: Why should I do SEO over PPC?

A: After optimizing your website and getting ranked high in the search engines, you could get just as much traffic or more than PPC and not have to pay per visitor to your site. More bang for your buck! Also, many people consider you an expert in your industry if they find you ranked high in the search engines. However, an aggressive approach would be to do a combination of PPC and SEO. Visitors from PPC ads are different from those who come from the free listings. This way you can target them both.

Q: How can I track the results of my SEO or PPC campaigns?

A: Depending on which package you sign up for, you will receive Web traffic reports on a monthly, bi-monthly or custom basis. These reports will keep you up-to-date on where your website traffic is coming from, how successful your various keywords are in relation to each other and to your competitors and they will help you revise your search-engine strategies. Plus, if you call us we can usually send you a current report quickly. We are ready to serve you in all of your SEO and PPC needs.

Q: I’ve submitted my site to the search engines. Why am I not getting traffic?

A: Submission is only the first step in getting the search engines to recognize you. It allows them to index your site and rank you according to their formula. Depending on how relevant they find you, you’ll get indexed but not necessarily ranked high. The next step is to work on your ranking and submit again.

Q: Why do I need to be submitted to the search engines once a month?

A: In the early stages of the search engines, they would send a computer program around to “crawl” the entire Internet looking for websites to list in their pages. A lot of people believe that’s how search engines still work today, but that’s actually illegal now. It’s too much of a security breach and companies were seeing Web pages they never intended to publish listed in the search engines for public access.

Now the search engines have to have a formal request to legally crawl a website and list it within their search pages. That formal request is known as a submission. The problem is that if changes are made to the site, the search engines can’t come back to that site to make any updates in their pages. The only way a search engine can update its listings is if a website sends them another submission.

It’s now become standard operating procedure for a website to submit itself once a month for regular updates and to stay listed in the search-engine pages. Without regular submission, search engines will likely delete a website from its listings.

Q: I’ve done my Meta keywords. Why am I not ranked?

A: Meta keywords are important but they are just one factor among many that determine your ranking on search engines. There isn’t one magic bullet that can vault you to the top of the search engines. It’s more like 30 or so little things that you must do correctly (including Meta tags) that will increase your ranking.
